School and childcare

Childcare and school systems are very important matters to those bringing their families.

Below we have collected a list of childcare companies, daycare facilities and international schools. In Denmark children are offered childcare until the age of 6, following which children begin formal schooling. You can choose between public, private and international Schools and while Public schooling is free, many expats prefer International schools.

Age 0-3

Nurseries take in children from six months to three years of age. The staff is especially trained to look after the needs of your child and your child will be a part of a large group of children.

If you prefer that your child is looked after in a private home with a small group of children you could choose a day care instead.

Age 3-6

Kindergartens take in children from the age of two years and ten months until the day they start school.

Age 6-17

In Denmark all children are entitled to free education at a public school. It is compulsory for children to attend school from the age of 6. The first year is kindergarten class followed by nine years of schooling which may be supplemented by an optional grade 10.

You can choose between:

  • Enrolling your child in a public school
  • Enrolling your child in a private, international school
  • Teaching your child at home. The local municipality carries out supervision, if you choose to teach your child at home.

Following primary school, which is completed at the age of 16-17, nearly all Danish students continue on to some form of upper secondary education.

After school

After school care programs are offered for school children between 6-13 years of age.

For children between 6-10 years, the after school care is called an SFO (Skolefritidsordning). The SFO is located at the school and offers a range of creative and social activities for children. The opening hours of SFOs vary from school to school but most are open from 6.30am-8am and from 12pm-5pm. SFO personnel are professionals and generally have educational training. Enrolment is possible through the school or municipality. Price of SFOs varies from DKK 900-2200 a month.

For children between 10-13 years, recreational clubs are offered normally open in the afternoons and early evening. The clubs offer lots of activities like music, theatre, film, computers, sports, nature and outdoor activities. More information can be obtained at the school or municipality.

Child benefit

When working in Denmark, you are eligible to receive child benefit.

Child benefit is based on the rules of Optjeningsprincippet. This means that full allowance is only granted if the parent has resided or been working in Denmark or another EU/EØS country for a period of two years out of the last teen years.

Non EU citizens
If you are a non EU citizen, payments should automatically start six months after registration and according to below payment scheme.

EU/EØS citizens
If you are an EU/EØS citizen and have worked in your home country or another EU/EØS country for a period of two years out of the last ten years, you are entitled to full child benefit. Application is possible from the day of CPR registration. The application process is extensive since the Danish authorities have to verify your information with the country in which you have previously worked. Upon approval, the child benefit will be calculated from the day of CPR registration in Denmark.

Udbetaling Danmark
All payments are done by Udbetaling Danmark.
Kindly ring Udbetaling Danmark directly on +45 7012 8062 to ensure that you are registered in their system and to receive guidance going forward. Remember to have CPR numbers for all family members ready plus your work contract and pay slips for the first working months in Denmark.

Please find the application form ”Ansøgnings- og oplysningsskema til udbetaling af børne- og ungeydelser”  on the website of Udbetaling Danmark.

Payment scheme
After six months in Denmark 25% of the amount will be paid
After one year in Denmark 50% of the amount will be paid
After one and a half years 75% of the amount will be paid
After two years the full amount will be paid

The benefit is paid on the following dates:

Registration before:  Allowance paid on:
March 31 April 20
June 30  July 20
September 30 October 20
December 31 January 20

Amounts per child:
0-2 years old DKK 4.443,00 every quarter
3-6 years old DKK 3.519,00 every quarter
7-14 years old DKK 2.769,00 every quarter
15-17 years old DKK 923,00 a month

On 1 January 2014, the amount of child benefit was regulated according to income. A yearly income exiting DKK 713.100 means a lower allowance. Two percent of the income exiting is deducted the yearly paid child benefit. Kindly see examples below:

One income
Yearly income = DKK 850.000
Income exceeding = (850.000 - 712.600) = DKK 137.400
Yearly deduction = (137.400*2%) = DKK 2.748 meaning DKK 687 every quarter

Family income
Yearly income husband = DKK 850.000
Yearly income wife = DKK 920.000
Income exceeding = (850.000 - 712.600)  = DKK 137.400
Income exceeding = (920.000 - 712.600)  = DKK 207.400
Total = (137.400 + 207.400)  = DKK 344.800
Yearly deduction =  (344.800*2 %) = DKK 6.896 meaning DKK 1.724 every quarter

Should you have any further questions regarding child benefit, kindly ring Udbetaling Danmark directly on +45 7012 8062.

Childcare subsidy

When choosing private childcare, it is possible to claim subsidy from the municipality. The amount of subsidy depends on the age of child and numbers of weekly childcare hours. An application must be filled in and sign by both parents and the private childcare and send to the municipality for review. All payments are deposited in your NemKonto the last bank day of the month.

The subsidy can wary from municipality to municipality. Following please find the price list for 2013/2014 for the municipality of Copenhagen.

Please ask your Settwell Counselor for more information.
